Read
To Help You To Succeed Program, created by JIREH PUBLISHERS®, is based on the
Research-Based Instruction in Reading Report by the National Reading Panel.
According to Dr. Bonnie B. Armbruster, of the Department of Curriculum and
Instruction at the University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign, in doing the
research, "they culled out those they thought were the most worthy or that
had the strongest scientific support for practices or programs that should be
implemented in classrooms." (Report of the Regional Literacy Network Annual
Meeting, April 25, 2002) According to the research, there are five components to
an effective reading program. They are phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency,
vocabulary, and text comprehension.
The lessons and activities in Read To Help You To Succeed
Program reinforce each of these components.
Phonemic Awareness
There are a variety of rhymes, songs, and poetry within this
program. Vocabulary words are constantly reinforced. Oral blending can also be
reinforced by having students count the number of syllables in each word and
saying it syllable by syllable.
Phonics
There are a variety of lessons on prefixes, suffixes, and root
words. There are also lessons on context clues, possessives, compound words, and
idioms.
Fluency
Fluent Readers are able to read with speed and accuracy. There
are a variety of structured assignments that can be used to improve fluency,
including fiction and non-fiction.
Vocabulary
There are a variety of assignments that emphasize vocabulary
skills. Some of the activities are defining vocabulary words, analogies, context
clues, puzzles, games, synonyms, connotations, figurative language, and cloze.
Text Comprehension
The program aids students in comprehending materials that they
read through the following assignments: graphic organizers, finding the main
idea, critical thinking, distinguishing fact vs. opinion, drawing conclusions,
contrasting questions, and research assignments.
